Established in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain is the sole TLD intended for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level domains remained online.
